In my eyes, it is the best anime ever. Yeah it may be a magical girl anime, not much of a fan of those, but this one is different. They don't go around with stupid wands and all that jazz, they have actual fricken weapons. Sure the main character Nanoha has a staff, but she just kicks ass. The second main character Fate has an axe that can change into an energy scythe, that just screams bad-fricken-ass. And when they're older in the third season they are both beautiful and well grown in the right places.
A fact about the show is that there is an adult VN, visual novel, that had Nanoha in it as a side character. They somehow decided to make an anime with her as the main character as a magical girl, and this amazing series was born. It completely revamped how magical girl animes should be like. If I see a magical girl anime that doesn't have something like weapons, I'm not gonna even touch it. It set my standards for them pretty high.
Sorry about some of my language, but it had to be said. I will defend this anime with everything I have, as it is and always will be my favorite anime series.
Description of the first season (copied from the MyAnimeList site).
3rd grader Takamachi Nanoha stumbled upon an injured talking ferret after hearing his telepathic cries for help. The ferret turned out to be Yuuno, an archeologist and mage from another world who had accidentally scattered the dangerous Jewel Seeds throughout Earth. Without the strength to collect the Jewel Seeds, Yuuno had resumed a ferret form and needed someone else to take on the task for him. He gave a red jewel to Nanoha explaining to her with this she could transform and use magic to combat the monsters that threatened them due to the Jewel Seeds. But the monsters are the least of their worries, as Yuuno and Nanoha are not the only ones out to collect the Jewel Seeds.
So I would highly recommend this anime to everybody and everything. (So that includes even animals, that's how good it is imho.)
